Car wrecks and catastrophic injuries

On Behalf of | Oct 4, 2020 | Personal Injury

If you have been in an auto wreck, you know that the collision can impact more than just your car. Between medical bills and lost wages, the pain may last long after you have left the scene of the crash.

When other drivers act negligently or recklessly, you may need help, financially and medically. You should seek medical attention immediately following an accident, but you may need to follow up if you suspect any of the following ailments.

Traumatic brain injury

If you struck your head in the crash, you may need to look out for traumatic brain injury. Obvious symptoms include severe headaches, vomiting, convulsions and slurred speech. A TBI may present in more subtle ways, too, such as confusion, difficulty recognizing familiar faces or lack of muscle coordination.

Spinal cord injury

Traffic accidents, particularly read-end collisions, may result in spinal cord injury. Extreme back pain or a twisted spine may indicate SCI. Other signs include weakness or numbness in limbs, trouble breathing and an impaired sense of balance. If you lose control of your bladder or bowels, seek emergency medical attention.

Mental and emotional trauma

The initial shock of a crash may wear off after a period of hours or days. However, you may feel the mental and emotional effects of the accident for much longer. You may have frequent nightmares or flashbacks. You may suffer from insomnia, excessive anxiety or intense feelings of fear. Depression is possible.

You should not have to suffer due to someone else’s negligence. After an auto wreck, be sure to get the care you need.
