Sharing children with your ex means that you will still have contact with each other. This makes it hard to move on. It is necessary to set your focus on moving past the marriage so that you can enjoy your new life. This can be a challenge, but you can make it happen through hard work.

If you are going to help your children thrive despite the divorce, you have to be on stable footing. You need to be able to handle your emotions. You have to be the model to show them what to do. This all starts with letting go of the failed marriage.

You can’t think that you will be able to move on immediately. It is a process. It will take a while and during the adjustment period, be willing to forgive yourself for all emotions you feel. You are going to go through a wide range of feelings. You may feel angry one minute and start to cry the next. You might be elated at the thought of freedom but anxious about it, too. Accept these and work through them so that you can move on to being happy and focused.

If seeing your ex is causing negative circumstances for your life, you might need to adjust the parenting plan so that you aren’t spending so much time with them. This could mean moving from co-parenting to parallel parenting, so you only see each other at the transition times.

You should also try to work through the divorce matters as quickly as possible. Knowing that this is over might help you move on.
